Lessons from Flowers in the Bible

Springtime is a beautiful season when the weather is nice, and the flowers are blooming. We behold God’s splendor in creation and marvel at His goodness. Christians should keep in mind that everything God has created, He made with a purpose. God creates in order to point us to His existence, His glory, and His genius (Psalm 19:1–4; Acts 14:17). However, God also uses the various aspects of creation to teach us important lessons of eternal value. This spring, as you observe the flowers, there are a few lessons from Scripture to keep in mind that will build your faith and remind you of the God we’re serving.

Earthly Beauty Fades, but God’s Word Remains Forever

“A voice says, ‘Call out.’ Then he answered, ‘What shall I call out?’

All flesh is grass, and all its loveliness is like the flower of the field.

The grass withers, the flower fades, when the breath of the LORD blows upon it;

Surely the people are grass. The grass withers, the flower fades,

But the word of our God stands forever.” (Isaiah 40:6–8). Aspects of the world’s beauty change and fade with the passing of the seasons, but God’s Word is here to stay. When you see the flowers come and then go, remind yourself that the Bible we read, and study contains a message that is eternal and unchanging (Matthew 24:35).

God Cares for Creation, and He Will Care for Us

Jesus asked His disciples, “And why are you worried about clothing? Observe how the lilies of the field grow; they do not toil, nor do they spin, yet I say to you that not even Solomon in all his glory clothed himself like one of these. But if God so clothes the grass of the field, which is alive today and tomorrow is thrown into the furnace, will He not much more clothe you? You of little faith!” (Matthew 6:28–30). God preserves His creation, and His provision for it should remind us of His continual provision for us (Philippians 4:19).

Earthly Wealth and Status Are Temporary

“Let the lowly brother boast in his exaltation, and the rich in his humiliation, because like a flower of the grass he will pass away. For the sun rises with its scorching heat and withers the grass; its flower falls, and its beauty perishes. So also, will the rich man fade away in the midst of his pursuits.” (James 1:9–11)

The earthly possessions we currently steward will not last forever. We should spend more time laying up heavenly treasures and building our hopes on things eternal (Matthew 6:19–21). Those in Christ have every spiritual blessing, and those blessings possess eternal value that will never diminish or fade (Ephesians 1:3–14).

These are a few lessons we learn as we look at flowers. Remember: God’s Word will forever remain, God’s care is constant and abiding, and heavenly treasures are the only treasures that will last forever.
