Secretaries in Scripture

Do the names Baruch or Tertius sound familiar? You likely recognize Jeremiah, Paul, and Peter for their preaching and writing, but these men did not work alone. Kingdom work has never been done in isolation—God uses many people with various gifts for His purposes.

Jeremiah, for instance, had Baruch—a trusted friend and scribe who helped him deliver God’s message to Judah (Jer. 36:4, 8). Paul, too, had help. The technical term for this is amanuensis, which refers to someone who takes dictation or copies manuscripts. Romans, though authored by Paul through the Holy Spirit (Rom. 1:1; 2 Tim. 3:16–17), was physically written by Tertius, who notes his role at the end of the letter (Rom. 16:22). Peter was also assisted by Silas in writing 1 Peter (1 Pet. 5:12). These secretaries played key roles in bringing God’s Word to the world.

This reminds us that preachers have always needed help, and God has provided them with faithful partners. At Cumberland Trace (and Lehman Avenue), we have been blessed with dedicated secretaries—most recently Linda Matthews and Ashley Waddell—who serve the church in many important ways.

Linda Matthews is retiring from full-time work as church secretary after many years of faithful service. She has served the church with joy, care, and a Christlike spirit. With warmth and grace, Linda welcomed visitors and supported the ministry in countless ways—from making copies, carefully preparing the weekly bulletin, keeping us informed about those in the hospital and staying in touch with shut-in members. She never sought recognition, but Scripture tells us to honor those who deserve it (Rom. 13:7). Her attitude mirrored Isaiah’s willing spirit (Isa. 6:8), and her service will not be forgotten by the Lord (Matt. 10:42).

Though she will not be in the office full-time, Linda’s heart for service remains. When you see her, be sure to say thank you and let her know how much her work has meant to this church family. The work of our church secretaries will continue through Ashley Waddell and Kya Hendrick. We are thankful for their willingness to serve and know the church office work will be in good hands.
