The Shepherd’s Voice

The Shepherd’s Voice

With the Marriage Seminar just around the corner I am reminded of my crockpot incident.

Several years ago, when Dawn and I were dating, we went to a potluck meal with her parents at the Crittenden Drive Church of Christ where they attended. Dawn had prepared a roast in her crockpot that cooked all through the night before.

We actually had matching crockpots. The only difference was the glass pot would come out of hers. Mine was not removable for some reason.

Just before the potluck began, we had to put the roast into a serving dish. We decided I would hold and rotate the crockpot over the serving dish while she spooned the roast out. I grabbed the handles on the side of the crockpot because the glass pot was too hot to handle or even touch. Thinking I was handling my crockpot, I rotated the crockpot too far and the glass pot came sliding out right at me. Without hesitation Dawn grabbed and held the crockpot to keep the roast or glass pot from hitting me.

At first, I was in shock because I knew how hot the glass pot was she was holding. Afterwards, seeing that she had sacrificed her own safety for me, I thought I have to marry this woman. Next year will be our 20-year anniversary.

However, I am constantly reminded of an incident that occurred around 2,000 years ago.

Jesus Christ, the Son of God, came to Earth and gave Himself as a sacrifice to put away sin so we could obtain salvation (Heb 9:23-28). He shed His precious blood which washes us free from our sins (Rev 1:5). He did this willingly (John 10:17-18) because of the love He had for us (Rom 5:6-11). After His crucifixion on the cross He was buried (Matt 27:45-61), raised from the dead (Matt 28:1-8) and then ascended to Heaven (Luke 24:50-53, Acts 1:9-11) to sit at the right hand of God (Mark 16:19) where He advocates with the Father on our behalf (1 John 2:1-2). This salvation was made available through faith and obedience to the gospel (1 Cor 15:1-2).
