A Sackful of Opportunity

A Sackful of Opportunity

Everyone has favorite phrases, idioms, and colloquialisms they like to use in casual conversation or writing. When I first became friends with Bobby Gilbert, he used such a phrase when describing a large family – “They had a sackful of kids.” How many that was, I don’t know…but it was certainly more than most!

This summer, there is a sackful of opportunity to be with church family, spend time in His Word, and get involved in the work here. Just to name a few of the many opportunities, there is VBS, Summer Bible Camp, the Summer Youth Series, the Wednesday Night Summer Series, Pew Packers, FHU – Horizons, Friday Singing Nights, and the Monday Night Bible Study.

However, for many of us, these activities will be such that we are the consumers, rather than the producers. We attend and are given something to experience and enjoy. But what about being producers? We also need to participate in making things happen for others.

Here are some suggestions (another sackful of opportunity) to do something, to produce something for the benefit of someone else and for the Lord’s church here. How about visiting or calling one of our more than 50 widows or widowers? What about making a visit to a member who is spending time in a hospital or nursing home? Inviting a visitor to lunch following Sunday services to get better acquainted? How about making the commitment to get involved with a Vision Group? Visiting those who are going through a difficult time? And let’s all continue to invite our family and friends to services or to have a Bible study.

1 Corinthians 15:58 says, “Therefore, my beloved brethren, be ye steadfast, unmovable, always abounding in the work of the Lord, forasmuch as ye know that your labor is not in vain in the Lord.” Galatians 6:9 admonishes, “And let us not be weary in well doing: for in due season we shall reap, if we faint not.”

Much effort goes into all of our summer activities, whether they are church-related or not. While we enjoy God’s sunshine, let’s commit to being consumers and producers for Jesus and His church. He’s given us a sackful of opportunities!
